New TRIYA Collection Harnesses the Power of Three

Number “three” powerful across ancient cultures

Pythagoras in ancient Greece viewed the number three as the perfect number. It was the first number to be the basis of the first shape, a triangle. The triangle often represents harmony, wisdom and balance. Later in Greece, Plato proposed that everything in the living world was formed from triangles. The Egyptian pantheon featured a supreme triad, Osiris, Isis and Horus. Similarly, ancient Sumerians also revired triads, viewing the universe as divided into three realms - the heavens, the earth and the abyss.

Trimurti, 10th Century India

 

The divine triad, or Trimurti, is a strong theme in Hinduism, comprising three main deities, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The three deities represent the three primary functions of the cosmic universe - creation, preservation and destruction or transformation, respectively. Furthermore, there are three Doshas or mind-body types in Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of well-being. Buddhist philosophy is based on the “Three Jewels,” the Awakened One (the Buddha), the Dharma (the teachings) and the Sangha (the community). 

The number three represents harmony with the universe and felt like a powerful place to start designing my new collection. In naming the collection, I needed the name to encompass not only the meaning of three but also the powerful energy that the triad exudes. In Sanskrit, the root “tri” means the numerical number three. “Triya” refers to a triad or threefold nature and “Triya” also refers to the concept of trinity. This is an instance where language is deeply intertwined with the culture that the word “Triya” takes on a philosophical understanding beyond the definition of the word. Hence, Triya was the perfect name for my new collection. 

Sri Yantra, 11,000-10,000 BCE India

The earliest record of the Sri Yantra is estimated to be 11,000-10,000 BCE. The Sri Yantra starts with two triangles. From there, many triangles are added to form a geometric pattern that is perceived to be the shape of the origin of our cosmos. In the Indian tradition, every human being and living creature has a cellular origin that can be traced back to the shape of equilateral triangles. In the center of the Sri Yantra is the Bindu, or origin point of the universe that contains concentrated divine energy. The Triya Hand Chain, with east-to-west set 3-bead motifs is inspired by this idea of Bindu. The colored gemstone that sits in the center and takes prominence is a strong reminder of the present moment and the power we all have to create what we desire with the energy of the universe fueling our existence.

Invitation to harness the cyclical power of three

Trikala, or the three different periods of time (past, present and future or morning, afternoon and night) served as inspiration for this collection. I was in the postpartum period when I started this collection and it is an intense period where time slows down. I found myself reflecting quite a bit on the past, the present experience of giving birth and questioning what my future would look like. The Triya Gemstone Pendant features a three-bead motif below a colored gemstone that I personally source. This necklace reminds me that in the midst of chaos and the unknown, I can find harmony with this universe in my small way. 

The three bead motif runs throughout the Triya collection, in the Triya Hand Chain as well as the Triya Gemstone Ring. The beads are then presented in a continuous line on the Triya Bracelet with pear shaped diamonds and a custom engraving. I am so pleased to present the new pieces and share some insight into my process and stories of my heritage.
